I have always loved taking pictures, and just in the past few years I decided to combine my love of concerts with my love of photography. Throughout my junior and senior year of high school I was able to work under two mentors that worked as marketing directors for concert venues/promotional companies for music venues and concerts in Dallas. I worked with them to do various tasks and projects including working on the marketing for “Off the Rails Fest” in Frisco, TX. This is a country music festival that comes to Frisco every year, this past year with headliners such as Luke Bryan, Eli Young Band, Jake Owen, and Luke Combs. While working with my mentor and seeing how a festival gets promoted, I was also given the opportunity to take pictures for their future promo. This was my first time taking pictures at a concert and I was so excited to be up close and personal with the artists.
During the two day festival, I was able to have access to the photographers pit on both the main stage and the outside stage where I could take pictures of the artists while they were on stage.
I learned a ton from this experience including specific terms and phrases used in the industry, as well as how to position myself to get the best possible shot, especially because I was significantly lower than the artist, which required my camera to be pointed upward at the subject. I also incorporated many of the terms I later studied in this class, including the rule of thirds. In almost all of my horizontal photos, the subject is in one of the side columns to enhance the viewing experience of the picture.
I had such a great time taking these pictures and learning new tricks and settings with my camera; I hope to do it again as soon as possible.
